Spiritous and SanDisk teamed up to design and build a completely custom app to automate and streamline an existing business process and workflow. The app, dubbed SanDisk Jolt, was executed on an extremely tight timeline and budget.

About the Client

SanDisk (NASDAQ: SNDK) was founded in 1988 as a three-person company in Silicon Valley. Explosive success and growth led to an acquisition by Western Digital (NASDAQ: WDC) in 2016, contributing over 5,000 patents to Western Digital’s growing portfolio of innovation. As an innovator in digital storage with breakthrough products and ideas that push the boundaries of what’s possible, their flash memory technologies are used by many of the world’s leading data centers, embedded in the most advanced smartphones, tablets, and laptops, and are trusted by consumers around the world. From handheld devices to hyper-scale data centers, SanDisk is expanding the possibilities of storage.

About the Project

As a prolific technology company with billions of customers and clients in North America, Europe, Asia, and around the world, SanDisk technology leaders were seeking a better way to manage their day-to-day technology operations for their largest and most important clients. SanDisk Jolt was a specialized web application envisioned to manage routine technology upgrades, improvements, and maintenance across a diverse array of locations and offices.

Partnering with Spiritious, the project team set out to design and build a completely custom app that would revolutionize the existing business process and bring a new level of transparency and automation to the technology staff involved in these services.

Discovery and Planning

SanDisk Jolt wireframes

Low-fidelity wireframe prototypes were used to rapidly explore early design ideas and iterate based on team discussion.

These clickable prototypes explored the complex functionality and organization of information that would be required to exist in the application to be. Business leaders at SanDisk were intimately familiar with this process, and were pivotal in relaying a nuanced workflow to the design team.

Information architects at Spiritous analyzed the data schema and business workflow, creating a simplified navigation structure that provided effortless access to content throughout the app. This navigation structure was based on a layered information approach, where big-picture information was offered up front, while detailed information was made available after drilling into a specific facet of the interface.

Interactive Design

SanDisk Jolt transactions screen design

What could have been as simple as a table of data was transformed into a truly compelling interactive experience.

The existing business process relied heavily on spreadsheets and database tables to store information. While it would have been easy enough to simply migrate this information into the new application, design artists at Spiritous sought to create something truly unique that would give the new app an intuitive and inviting user appeal. Each application screen was carefully crafted to clearly communicate the interactive nature of the interface.

Intuitive interactive forms were essential to the successful development of the new app.

Using a customized version of the Bootstrap interface template, developers at Spiritous placed great emphasis on the careful development of the interactive features of the application. This included dialogs, forms, and editable elements of the interface that were essential to the success of the overall app experience.

SanDisk Jolt responsive design

With staff and customers on a variety of devices, the responsive mobile experience was carefully considered and tested throughout development.

Careful implementation of an optimized mobile experience allowed SanDisk Jolt to become more than just a web application. By adding a bookmark to the home screen on any device, Jolt essentially became a standalone app that could easily be launched from any internet-connected device, including smartphones, tablets, computers, and televisions.

Using the inherent responsive nature of the Bootstrap interface template, a working prototype for the app interface was quickly drafted on an extremely tight timeline, with implementation taking less than two weeks.
